Art & Design
We recognize the value of art and design in developing children’s individual curiosity, creativity and cultural understanding of the world around them. We aim to deliver a curriculum that is accessible to all with opportunities to develop resilience, confidence and critical-thinking. In creating a wide range of products and artwork, these skills can transfer to other parts of the curriculum. Research from “Cultural Learning Alliance’ states ‘Arts have the power to change and shape young people’s lives.” Year on year, our curriculum introduces children to a variety of art and artists from different periods and different cultures. Through discussions and evaluations, children develop a sense of opinion, enabling them to be curious world citizens. Every year there is a clear progression of skills which build on prior learning such as using tools and techniques with increasing mastery. From Year 1 upwards, children keep their own sketchbooks which support their understanding of visual literacy.
